The Panton chair is an instantly recognisable form, with a cantilever design that has become synonymous with designer Verner Panton. Created from one piece of moulded plastic, the chairs design and construction was a breakthrough in material use at the time of creation, and holds the title as the first single piece moulded chair created.

Produced by Vitra to this day, they are fully stackable, and incredibly durable. Use them indoors or outdoors. It is hard to beat the combined beauty, comfort and overall function of these chairs.

A rare modular candle holder, Jigsaw, which twists, stacks and turns into a range of different shapes and sizes. Unapologetically raw, the cast metal surfaces have gained a beautiful patina over their 30 year life, telling stories of many candlelit evenings spent around the table.

With very little information on the design and history, we reached out to the designer, Kazuyo Komoda, for some insight into the backstory and design. One of her first projects as a freelance designer in Italy.

Stated beautifully, she says “ I remember back then, I often spent evenings by candlelight. I didn't have a TV, there was no internet yet. There was only moving light and silence, so I came up with various ideas for candle holders. “

Despite the similarities in form to that of an oversized bike chain, Komoda took no intentional reference from this, and the design arose naturally in her pursuit of an infinitely modular shape.

Kazuyo Komoda [ born 1961 in Tokyo ] is a prominent Japanese industrial designer, interior architect, and colour consultant who has been based in Milan, Italy since 1989. Her work is celebrated for its unique fusion of minimalist Japanese sensibilities with the rich, expressive traditions of European design.

High tech in design, the perforated seat and backrest allow consistent airflow, and are sculpted ergonomically to the natural curves of the body.

A staple of commercial interiors that has trickled over into many residential interiors, the chairs are lightweight, stackable and look awesome in the warm yellow tone.

Great as an office chair at home, or set around a larger table in the workplace, it’s a versatile chair that serves it’s intended purpose incredibly well.

Zero Halliburton, a luggage manufacturer based in the US, specialising in hard wearing aluminium cases to suit a range of needs. Much like their German competitors Rimowa, both companies have roots in manufacturing for the aviation industry, informing a clean and streamline look, defined by the two ridges than run around the perimeter of each Zero Halliburton Case.

Most notably, the company produced a case for NASA that was used to transport Moon rocks back to earth. A true testament to the quality of construction the company provides.

This Trunk case, from the same era, offers a timeless look that has remained relatively unchanged from the 60s till now.

Suitable for a number of practical uses, including it’s original function as a suitcase. it’s a generous scale that is built to last a lifetime or two, and will only get better with age as you add your own history to it over the years.

Continuing the iconic design language established with Graves’ ‘Kettle with a singing bird’, the ‘Pelicano’ coffee maker is rare design from the mid 90s. As expected, it has all the classic details like the thermo-moulded plastic handles and a studded base, yet unlike the kettle, it serves a much greater function than just boiling water. Elevate your morning coffee routine and enjoy not only the end result, but the process too.

A pair of POP coat stands from Rexite. Super functional, there are larger and smaller hooks that freely rotate, alongside a umbrella rest and drip tray for when the weather isn’t playing ball. Constructed in several pieces, the umbrella stand and tray can be removed for a more streamline look if desired.

The gently rounded edges give this piece a lovely softness, also ensuring no pulls or catches on any garments being hung.

Constructed to a very high quality, Rexite is predominantly a commercial office brand, meaning they are built to be in constant repeated use and to take anything and everything that is thrown at them.

A particularly clever piece of Italian lighting design by Stilnovo, the [ Periscopio ] is a compact table lamp that transforms into a clamp lamp by removing its weighted cast base.

The articulated stem allows the light to be positioned with ease, bending back and forth and also rotating. The simple construction gives the lamp its distinctive, almost industrial character. Used with its cast base, it works beautifully as a desk or bedside lamp or remove the base and the body can be secured directly to a table, shelf or work surface.

A great example of the practical ingenuity that defined Italian lighting of the period, understated, highly functional and unmistakably sculptural.

The avant-garde design duo of ‘King Kong’ is made up of two designers, Stefano Giovannoni & Guido Venturini. With a interest in popular culture and cartoons, the duo aimed to capture a childish playfulness within their designs. The ‘Girotondo’ range offers the familiar cut-out man as the central icon, stemming from the name itself which is taken from the Italian version of the common rhyme ‘ring-a-ring-a-roses’, a fitting motif to decorate the entire range.

This black tray lends itself to a number of uses. Perfect as a table centrepiece for fruit or bread, or as a catch-all for pocketable items, the playful cut-out motif makes this a seamless and enjoyable addition to any contemporary space.

By the mid-1990s Oakley had cemented itself as a leader in innovative eyewear, but founder Jim Jannard wanted something that would set the brand apart entirely.

This ambition gave rise to X-Metal, a titanium alloy that became the foundation of Oakley’s most legendary frames.

The X-Metal line debuted in 1997. First with the Romeo, and later with the Mars and Juliet

Described by Oakley as “an evolutionary application of a new metallurgical process and a breakthrough in structural physics.” Built to withstand extreme stress, even the weight of a car.

The X-Metal collection remains the clearest expression of Oakley’s ethos, no other sunglasses carry the same history, innovation, or cult following.

A distinctive and two-piece mug in glass and stainless steel. Perfect for hot beverages, the separation of materials keeps the steel handle cool to the touch.

Imagined after a visit to a local zipper factory, Sarpaneva noticed the intriguing pattern left by in the off-cuts following the sheet steel stamping process that created the small zipper pulls. A design rooted in making use of excess manufacturing waste, with the original production runs in the 50s actually using these zipper off-cuts.

The figure-8 handle is comfortable in hand, with the curves echoes in the concave impression on the glass itself.

A functional and elegant daily mug that embodies a design process that is relevant now more than ever.

A striking example of Rosenthal's Studio-Line collection, the [ Metropol ] pattern was designed by Barbara Brenner in the early 1990s.

With its bold geometric graphics and Memphis-inspired forms, Metropol brings a distinctly postmodern character to an otherwise classic porcelain tableware form.

Produced between 1990–1998, the collection has become increasingly sought after for its playful mix of colour, geometry and functional design.

A great standalone piece for use as a catch-all or small serving dish.

The ‘Bombo’ stool is a sculptural modern classic, drawing clear inspiration from the space age era of the 1970s. Sweeping curves and a classic single piece tub seat give them a great presence with a space. A refined look in this grey / chrome combination.

First produced in 1961, the Eames Universal Base table was an addition to the growing portfolio of Eames table designs in the Herman Miller Offering. The construction of the Eames Universal Base table was similar to that of the earlier Contract range, with a black steel pedestal and vinyl rimmed table top. The difference is noticeable in the shape of the base, made with a more slimline, sleeker design but still constructed with the raw aluminium, an Eames staple.

This table offers a beautiful cherry wood table top. Each foot can be individually adjusted to ensure a level table top when placed on uneven surfaces.

Produced by Crayonne under the guidance of Terrance Conran for his UK based store Habitat, the Input range is a particularly striking example of the bold plastics that were so popular in the 1970s.

With no particular function in mind, these were intended as a universal container spanning a wide range of uses due to it’s generous size.

The main detail, 3 recessed domes that create a comfortable and intriguing grip for the lid.

faded with age, it’s original bold yellow has been softened in a way that we think is quite nice.

A comprehensive visual history of the modern chair, presented as a single large-format poster by the Vitra Design Museum.

Designed by Mendell & Oberer, the poster brings together 224 chairs from the Vitra Design Museum Collection, arranged chronologically from 19th-century designs through to the end of the 20th century. Each entry identifies the designer, date and manufacturer, creating an unusually dense reference work that also functions as a graphic piece in its own right.

This third revised edition culminates a Philippe Starck’s La Marie chair for Kartell (1998–99) a fitting endpoint for a survey tracing the development of the chair from Thonet through the radical material and manufacturing experiments of the 20th century. Spanning 1800–1999.

Produced during the formative period of the Vitra Design Museum, the poster reflects the institution's influential approach to documenting and contextualising furniture design. It is an intriguing and striking piece of design ephemera, part reference tool, part graphic object.

A rare example of Oakley’s Magnesium M Frame, developed in 2002 as an experimental extension of the brand’s technical eyewear programme.

The frame is constructed from lightweight magnesium alloy, an unusually advanced material choice for eyewear, offering high strength and rigidity at exceptionally low weight. Rather than relying on the usual moulded O-Matter construction of the standard M Frame, the Magnesium version uses a precisely formed metal chassis, giving the piece a distinctly technical character.

This example retains its original lens in exceptional, scratch-free condition. Removable and replaceable through the use of recessed torx screws.

Finished in a denim blue, with Oakley branding and technical detailing throughout. A particularly scarce and collectible branch of the M Frame family, representing Oakley at its most experimental, where industrial design, sports technology and material engineering converge.

Kartell’s nesting tables were a first step in developing the idea of a single piece of injected moulded plastic being all that is needed to create beautiful and functional furniture design.

As a new material of the time, the ability to achieve a one step manufacturing process was invaluable to both cost and production time, and is an idea which has now become ingrained in the way we produce objects today.

Soft geometric curves create a lip around all edges of the piece, giving it strength and structure, while maintaining a sense of lightness in form.

Not a staggered set of three, all the same [ tallest ] height. Priced individually.

Compact vintage Japanese folding Binoculars by Crystar. often referred to as opera glasses. The body folds neatly in on itself, reducing the glasses to a slim pocket sized package while protecting the optics when not in use.

These caught my eye in the 1987 Bond film ‘The Living Daylights’ where their adjustable form and utilitarian detailing allowed them to slot seamlessly into the array of other bond gadgets.

Made in Japan and typical of the finely engineered, highly functional optical objects produced during the mid-century period, they combine a simple Galilean optical system with a precise folding mechanism and central focus. At 2.5× magnification, they are intended for close-range viewing rather than serious long-distance observation. Perfectly suited to the theatre, concert hall or simply as an intriguing everyday object.

A particularly nice example of Japanese industrial design: compact, mechanical and pleasingly tactile.

A table held together with tension. Thanks to the natural spring effect of wood, the Sparondo dining table needs no screws or other connecting parts for assembly. Taken apart or put together in a matter of minutes, the legs flex and click into place on the underside of the table is an intriguing and firm way.

One of my favourite furniture companies, a piece from Nils Holger Moormann will always surprise and delight with unique yet super simple means of assembly.

Utilitarian materials are always used, beech wood with a laminate surface in this instance. A perfect lightweight compact table for a smaller space.

Crafted in Germany by the Moormann team. No longer in production.

Crafted from heavy, fluidly shaped glass, the [ Urchin ] ashtray perfectly captures the space-age, biomorphic aesthetic of legendary industrial designer Marc Newson.

Its organic, slightly deformed circular silhouette echoes the iconic fluid curves of his famous Orgone furniture series. The heavy glass features 15 smooth, machine-cut cigarette rests along the upper rim.

The design originated in 1995 as a promotional commission for the Swedish tobacco brand Blend. Newson later produced a solid green crystal version for the tables of London's ultra-trendy Coast Restaurant. Recognizing its brilliant sculptural appeal, design director Tom Dixon brought a mass-market, hollow glass version to British retailer Habitat in 1998, instantly turning a utilitarian object into a highly collectible piece of late-90s pop culture.

This Low 81B coffee table offers a relaxed familiarity directly inline with Alvar Aalto’s conception of versatile furniture. Constructed in Finnish birch, it holds a natural beauty and radiates warmth, ageing gracefully over time. The table top offers a balck linoleum finish, an excellent contrast to the natural birch wood and a very forgiving and maintainable surface that ages beautifully.

Best suited as a coffee table, it’s a substantial and nice tall height perfect as a functional centre to a lounge space.

Often replicated, but never matched, the quality construction, balanced proportion and warm timber finish combine into a timeless piece that has been at the forefront of contemporary style since it’s creation in 1933.

Stelton’s range of jugs and serving utensils have lead the way to a refined and functional aesthetic inside kitchen and dining areas.

This EM1310 water jug is a lesser known design from the Danish manufacturer. Without the vacuum chamber of the EM77, this open plastic jug has a much larger capacity. Similar in many ways, the main design difference is the pouring spout. This jug offers a much softer curved lip compared to the more angular design of the EM77.
