Navy and Cream Upholstered 'DSS' chairs by Charles & Ray Eames for Herman Miller

Condition Report: Good vintage condition. No rips or tears to the fabric. The dark blue colour has faded with time, mainly around edges. A few faint stains in places. Chrome legs are in good shape, slight pitting in areas. 2 of the chairs are missing floor glides on certain feet. 2 fully complete, and 2 with missing glides. Reach out for detailed images

The DSS chair is a fiberglass dining chair that solved a problem for the Eamses that plywood could previously not. A single continuous curved form that effortlessly shapes to the user. Initially manufactured in fiberglass as seen in this original version, it was more recently switched to polypropylene for environmental reasons.
Less commonly seen is the upholstered version. The combination of cream fiberglass and a navy blue upholstery is an excellent combination. The fading of the fabric gives the chairs a unique charm, only possible with age.
The Eamses had a unique way of naming each piece of furniture they designed. DSS simplifies the core components of the chair into a simple code. D (dining height) S (side chair) S (stacking base).
