An intriguing local link, Len Lye was a New Zealand artist working with film and kinetic sculpture, producing a range of work often centred around the distortion of film strips, he achieved some incredibly unique effects of colour and form by painting directly onto the raw celluloid. At a glance, his work is reminiscent of the 60s psychedelic era, yet in reality produced much earlier in the 20s and 30s.
Born in Christchurch in 1901, he spent much of his early life travelling through the south pacific where inspiration was drawn from traditional Maori and Polynesian patterns and artworks.
For this collection, Dries van Noten draws frame extractions from archival Len Lye films to inform the graphics and colours of each piece.
